ISLANDS TOURISM SEASONALITY

2015

The islands of the European Union, generally associated with the sun and sea, attract the great majority of tourist flows in the summer months. This characteristic is shared by all the islands, be they in the Mediterranean or in the Baltic. However, through detailed analysis and the use of specific indicators, it was demonstrated that some islands are increasingly developing winter tourism in an effort to improve the annual occupancy rate of beds and mitigate seasonality curves. This study examines some islands that are located in different seas of the European Union, at different latitudes and hence in different climatic zones. These islands are: Cyprus (CY), Sicily (IT), Madeira (PT), and…

Clustering local tourism systems by threshold acceptance

2015

Despite the importance of tourism as a leading industry in the development of a country’s economy, there is a lack of criteria and methodologies for the detection, promotion and governance of local tourism systems. We propose a quantitative approach for the detection of local tourism systems that are optimal with respect to geographical, economic, and demographical criteria. To this end, we formulate the issue as an optimization problem, and we solve it by means of Threshold Acceptance, a meta-heuristic algorithm which does not require us to predefine the number of clusters and also does not require all geographic areas to belong to a cluster.

THE MULTIPLE COUNTING OF TOURISTS IN SICILY AND THE ANALYSIS OF INTRA-REGIONAL TOURIST FLOWS

2008

Tourist arrivals are often wrongly interpreted as the number of tourists. The non-agreement between arrivals and tourists (Parroco and Vaccina, 2006) produces a large overestimation of the number of tourists really present at the destinations (tourists replication), so determining heavy consequences on economic and territorial planning. In order to get a first estimate of replications and to analyse the typical tourist tours throughout Sicily, in summer 2005 a census research was made on 8.883 tourists intercepted at 13 hotels in Cefalù, a well-known bathing resort in the Northern coast of Sicily (Italy).
